Town Win Bid for Royal British Legion

Telford & Shropshire Conferences, part of Transforming Telford, in partnership with The International Centre are celebrating after members of the Royal British Legion voted overwhelmingly to hold their 2011 National Conference in Telford.

Traditionally the event has always been held in a coastal resort however the delegates were so impressed by Telford and Shropshire that they voted by 311 to 101 to head to Telford.  The town is expected to welcome over 2500 delegates and partners to the National Conference which will be held in May 2011.

Delegates were impressed by the destinations mix of world class conference facilities at the International Centre alongside the historical setting of World Heritage Site of the Ironbridge Gorge.

Sarah Bird at the Convention Bureau Telford & Shropshire Conferences welcomed the event as a major boost for the destination;

 “This is a massive coup for the town and continues the growth in national organisations choosing Telford and Shropshire for their events.  We are delighted to have won this event at to be welcoming one of the largest associations in the UK with over 450,000 members.  The impact of a large event like this is huge; we estimate that it is worth £2million to the local economy”.

Sarah Raper of Transforming Telford said  “This is a real feather in the cap for Telford to win such a significant event. Business tourism is an important part of our regional economy and this win clearly demonstrates how strong our conference offer is to potential customers”.

The event will be hosted at The International Centre, Telford one of the UK's top 10 Conference and Exhibition Centres with a Civic Function at “Enginuity” in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge followed by the Parade of the Legion and Standard Bearers Church Service in Telford Town centre.

And to ensure that delegates enjoy the full Shropshire experience Partner Tours are being organised that will include many of the famous features of Shropshire, from medieval Shrewsbury to the culinary delights of Ludlow.
