Housing Growth
Identified as a main growth point within the West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy around 20,000 new homes are set to be built over the next 20 years. The aim is to build a diverse range of properties to meet all incomes and lifestyles, delivered in parallel with the regeneration and improvement of the town centre and other economic growth and restructuring projects.
Three major developments, led by English Partnerships are already underway:
- Ironstone at Lawley is a £500 million, 70 hectare (173 acre) scheme which will provide 3,300 homes and mixed-use space. It is built on former colliery land just over a mile to the west of Telford Town Centre and is a sustainable urban extension. The Lawley Developer Group (comprising Barrat, Persimmon Homes and George Wimpey) was formally appointed in November 2005 and has now started building the first residential stage.
- Lightmoor Village is a high-quality development promoting the best design and construction methods, together with the highest ecological and environmental standards, to create an urban village where people want to live, now and for generations to come. Persimmon Homes started the first wave of houses called the Laurels in August 2005 followed by George Wimpey Midland in September 2006 with Oakham Manor. Crest Nicholson are the latest development partners to be appointed with responsibility for the £33 million village centre. When completed in 2012, the 72 hectare (178 acre) village will be a mixed-use community of 800 homes, retail and leisure units around a new central square.
- Telford Millennium Community at East Ketley, to the north west of Telford town centre is one of only seven Millennium Communities in the country. It is a prestigious new development with approximately 700 high quality homes on a 35 hectare (86 acre) site with improved community facilities and public spaces. Using leading techniques it is setting extremely high standards in energy efficiency, waste management, transport and design.
